Pearls: The Eternal Love Of Women


The love for jewels among women has been a tradition since times immemorial. Be it any festive occasion, religious ceremony or a celebration of any kind, women rejoice in adorning themselves with jewels. Amidst numerous other objects of beauty, one of most beautiful and valued gemstones is “pearl”.

Pearl has mesmerized us with its sublime beauty since ages and continues to do so till date. The beauty of the pearl is in its simplicity and natural appeal. Unlike other gems, it derives nothing from art as it does not require any cutting or polishing. Since ancient times, the pearl has been considered a symbol of unblemished perfection. It is the oldest known gem, and for many centuries it was considered the most valuable. Pearls are one of best gifts of nature to mankind.

Pearls also have auspicious significance within many of the religions. The Hindu mythology speaks often of the pearl, and relates its discovery to Lord Vishnu, who searched the ocean for these ornaments to deck his daughter Pandala. In Islamic tradition, the pearl symbolizes perfection, and the Koran states that pearls are worn by those in Paradise. Christianity also recognizes the value of pearls; in the New Testament, Jesus compared Heaven to a “pearl of a great price”.

Traditionally, pearls represent beauty and wealth. In modern times, pearl jewelry signifies elegance, grace and sophistication. They can be worn along with almost all types of outfits. Hence, women of all ages around the world are fond of pearl ornaments and their timeless magnificence. Pearls are used to create different types of ornaments including necklaces, pendants, earrings, bangles, anklets, etc in combination with other precious metals, gems and stones. Pearl jewelry is available in a variety of lucrative colors, designs and patterns to choose from. They are also an ideal gift on auspicious occasions like weddings.

It is said that “Next to sound judgment, diamonds and pearls are the rarest things in the world”.
Freshwater and saltwater pearls are the two kinds of natural pearls and are rare to find. Pearls are also cultured which makes them widely available these days. The value of the pearl depends on the shape, size and luster. The bigger the pearl, the higher is the value. Owing of their unique beauty, pearls continue to be highly prized today.

Pearl jewellery has always been perceived as the pinnacle of polish and good taste. And with time, the trend of love for pearls continues to be persistent among women and being conveyed from one generation to the next.
